Google product category
The Google product category is where Google files a product in its own taxonomy, a choice it makes automatically and lets you override in a few cases.
- google_product_category
- GPC
What it means
Google gives every product a category from its own product taxonomy, a published tree in which each category has an ID and a full path.1 It does this automatically. What helps it choose correctly is accurate data: Google names titles, descriptions, pricing, brand and GTIN.2
The google_product_category attribute is optional, and Google accepts an override in only three cases:2
- When Google has wrongly put a product in a category that brings extra required attributes, such as clothing, mobile phones or software.
- When your Google Ads campaigns are built on Google’s categories.
- For alcohol.
An override has to be one of Google’s own categories, given as its ID or its full path, but not both. A category of your own belongs in product type instead.2
Think of it like this
It is like booking a hotel room. The hotel picks your room from its own floor plan, using the details on your booking. You can ask for a different one only for a few set reasons.
For example
A supplier’s Category column says Drills. Sent as a Google product category, that bare name is invalid. The valid forms are the full path, Hardware > Tools > Drills > Handheld Power Drills, or its ID, 2629.1 Leaving the value out is valid too: Google then uses “internal signals” to choose the category.3
Why it matters
For most products, accurate data is what gets them categorised correctly by Google, not this field. When you do fill it in, an invalid value is worse than none: Google says invalid values “will be rejected and may prevent your products from appearing”.3
Not to be confused with
It differs from product type. The Google product category must come from Google’s list, while product type holds your own category path, in your own words, up to 750 characters.4
