Google Shopping
Google Shopping is the everyday name for the places Google shows products for sale, most visibly the Shopping tab at google.com/shopping.
What it means
Google Shopping is the usual name for Google’s product results as a whole. The best known part is the Shopping tab, at google.com/shopping, where products from many shops appear side by side. A shopper who picks one is “directed to your online site to complete the purchase flow”.1
Two kinds of listing appear there, both fed by the product data shops send through Google Merchant Center. Free listings cost nothing. Shopping ads are paid, and appear in the tab’s ad slots.12 Free listings can also show on Search, Images, Lens, YouTube, Gemini and Maps.1
The name is used loosely. One of Google’s own help pages uses it for the paid side alone: to enable products for Google Shopping, it says, you need “Google Shopping campaigns in Google Ads”.3 So when someone says Google Shopping, ask whether they mean free listings, Shopping ads or both.
Think of it like this
Picture the window displays along a shopping arcade. Shoppers compare goods from many shops side by side, then walk into the shop they choose to pay.
For example
Search for a cordless combi drill and open the Shopping tab: drills from several shops appear side by side, each with a photo, title and price taken from that shop’s product data. Clicking one takes you to that shop’s own product page, at the address the shop gave Google in its feed.4
Why it matters
On the Shopping tab your product sits beside other shops’ versions of the same thing, so its photo, title and price do the selling. Your data also decides when it appears: Google says it relies “on the data that you provide to us to match your products with what customers might be searching for”.1
Not to be confused with
Google Shopping is not a marketplace like eBay or Amazon. Shopify’s developer documentation counts Google among “traffic-driving channels”, unlike “marketplaces like Amazon that have their own checkout”: with Google, the sale happens on your website.51
