AI Mode
AI Mode is a part of Google Search that answers a question with an AI-powered response, which you can follow up with further questions.
- Google AI Mode
What it means
In Google’s words, in AI Mode “You can ask anything and get an AI-powered response”, then go deeper “through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web”. It “divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously”. Google lists the United Kingdom among the countries where it is available.1
For shopping, Google said in May 2025 that AI Mode combines its Gemini AI with the Shopping Graph, Google’s store of product listings. Asked for a bag for rainy weather and long journeys, it works out what makes a bag suitable, then suggests “waterproof options with easy access to pockets”.2
Google also names it when explaining its product detail feed attribute, which helps shoppers find product information “across AI-driven surfaces, like AI Mode in Google Search”.3
Think of it like this
It is like asking a knowledgeable friend instead of reading a directory. You describe what you need, they work out what matters, and they point you to the products whose details show they fit.
For example
Asked for a waterproof travel bag with easy-access pockets, AI Mode has to find those facts somewhere. A rucksack listed with “Material: waterproof polyester” and “Pockets: 2 external, zipped” gives it facts to match. One listed only as “Travel bag, black” gives it none.
Why it matters
For shopping questions, AI Mode shows product listings chosen against the shopper’s criteria.2 If your data does not state a criterion, your product cannot be shown to meet it, however true it is.
Not to be confused with
AI Mode is not the Shopping Graph. AI Mode is the conversation a shopper has with Google Search; the Shopping Graph is the store of product listings it draws on.
