AI shopping assistant
An AI shopping assistant is a chatbot or search feature that answers shopping questions by matching them against the product data shops publish.

What it means
Instead of typing keywords and scanning a page of links, a shopper asks a question in plain words, such as a request for a 60cm fridge freezer that fits an alcove 1.9 metres high. The assistant turns the question into criteria and looks for products whose data meets them.
Google’s own example shows the method. Asked for a bag for rainy weather and long journeys, AI Mode “runs several simultaneous searches to figure out what makes a bag good for rainy weather and long journeys”. It then uses “those criteria” to suggest products.1 ChatGPT can also read a product feed that a merchant sends to OpenAI.2
Either way, an assistant has only what your data says. A fact buried in a PDF, a blank cell or a compound value like 1850x595x655 cannot be compared.
Think of it like this
It is like asking a well-read shop assistant who has never seen your stock, only your catalogue. They can recommend anything the catalogue describes clearly, and nothing it leaves out.
For example
Asked for a 60cm fridge freezer under 1.9 metres tall, an assistant can check a row that says “Height 1850 mm, width 595 mm”. The same fridge sent as “NX-4821-W FF SS”, with “1850x595x655” and no unit, gives it nothing safe to compare.
Why it matters
Assistants answer from the facts they are given. If a product’s data leaves out the size, material or capacity a shopper asks about, the assistant can pass it over, however well it fits. OpenAI’s guidance asks for “concise, factual copy that helps users understand products”.3
Not to be confused with
An AI shopping assistant is not the same as agentic commerce. An assistant finds and recommends; agentic commerce is when the AI also places the order for the shopper.
