Keyword stuffing

Keyword stuffing is cramming a page, title or description with repeated search terms to try to rank higher, at the cost of reading naturally.

What it means

Google defines it as “the practice of filling a web page with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate rankings in Google Search results”. It is one of Google’s spam policies, and one of its examples is “Repeating the same words or phrases so often that it sounds unnatural”.1

In product data it looks like a title reading “Kettle, cordless kettle, best kettle, kettle UK”, or a block of search terms pasted under a description. Google’s advice for page titles is that there is “no reason to have the same words or phrases appear multiple times”.2

Feeds follow the same rule. Google’s product detail attribute says “Avoid listing keywords or search terms”,3 and OpenAI asks for “concise, factual copy that helps users understand products”.4

Think of it like this

It is like a CV that says “team player” ten times. The reader notices the repetition, not the skills, and trusts the whole page a little less.

For example

A supplier’s title reads “Water Filter Fridge Filter Fridge Water Filter Filter”. Rebuilt from the row, it becomes “Brackmore fridge water filter, 2 pack”: each fact once, and nothing a shopper would search for is lost.

Why it matters

Repetition gives a search engine or an AI assistant nothing new to compare. Google says it “can make your results look spammy to Google and to users”.2 Sites that break its spam policies “may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all”.1

Not to be confused with

Keyword stuffing is not the same as using the words shoppers search for. Naming the product type, size and colour once, in plain words, is good practice; repeating them is stuffing.
