Leaf category
A leaf category is a category at the very end of a branch of a category tree, with nothing narrower beneath it, where products are filed.

What it means
In a category tree, some categories exist only to hold narrower categories. The ones at the very ends of the branches hold products instead, and those are the leaf categories. eBay’s developer documentation draws the line clearly: a leaf category “identifies a set of similar listings”, while a parent category “identifies a set of more specific categories”.1
On eBay, a seller picks a leaf category for each listing, and the item specifics eBay asks for belong to that leaf. eBay defines an aspect, the word its developer documentation uses for an item specific, as “a predefined attribute associated with a leaf category”.2
The same test works on your own tree: every product should sit in exactly one leaf, and none in a catch-all such as Misc.
Think of it like this
A leaf category is the shelf, not the aisle sign. The signs over the aisles only point you onwards, and the tins are on the shelves at the end of the walk.
