Universal Product Code
A UPC is the 12 digit form of the GTIN, the barcode number used mainly on products sold in North America.

What it means
UPC stands for Universal Product Code. GS1 US calls it a 12 digit code “primarily used in North America instead of the EAN”.1 Google lists it as the GTIN form for North America, also called GTIN-12.2
GS1 US splits a standard UPC-A into three parts. The first 6 to 10 digits are the company prefix that GS1 assigns. The next 1 to 5 are the item reference, which the brand owner chooses and changes for every variation. The last digit is the check digit.3
A compressed form, the UPC-E, shows just 8 digits by suppressing zeros. Google asks for those to be converted to the full 12.12
Think of it like this
It is like writing the 7th of the month as 07 on a form with two boxes. The extra 0 fills the space and changes nothing, which is how a UPC fits a 13 digit column.
For example
A supplier sheet for imported kitchenware has a UPC column holding 012345678905 for a stand mixer. Kept as text, all 12 digits go into the GTIN field as they are. Opened as a number, it becomes 12345678905, which is 11 digits, a length Google’s GTIN rules do not allow.4
Why it matters
A product made for the North American market may carry a UPC rather than an EAN. Google and ChatGPT’s product feed accept either. But that feed wants leading zeros kept,5 and a UPC that has lost its first 0 is the wrong length for Google too.4
Not to be confused with
A UPC is the same number as its EAN form. GS1 says a 12 digit GTIN has “an implied leading zero”. So with a 0 in front, a UPC is the same GTIN in 13 digits.6
