Free listings

Free listings are Google’s way of showing your products at no cost across Search, the Shopping tab, YouTube and more, using your Merchant Center data.

Also known as
  • Free product listings
  • Cost-free listings

What it means

Google’s Merchant Center glossary defines free listings as “a way to showcase your products on Google for free”.1 Through them, your products “can appear at no cost on Google Search, Google Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Google Images and Google Lens”.2

For most accounts they are on from the start: a new Merchant Center account is “opted in to free listings by default”. What they show is your product data, and every product needs an ID, a title, a description, a link to its page, an image link, a price and availability.2

Being switched on does not mean being shown. Google says the setting “doesn’t guarantee that your products will be shown to customers”, because it relies on your data to match them to what people search for.2

Think of it like this

Free listings are the free classified column of a local paper. Anyone can place an entry at no charge, but the paper decides what fits on the page, and the clear, complete entries are the ones readers find.

For example

A shop sells a Lowmere single ended bath. Its free listing on the Shopping tab shows the photo, title and price from its product data, and costs nothing when a shopper clicks.2 The click goes to the bath’s own product page, at the address the shop gave Google in its feed.3

Why it matters

Free listings put products in front of shoppers without paying per click, but only when the data is complete. A product missing a required attribute “won’t be able to be served in ads and free listings”,4 and variants also need an item group ID, which Google lists as required for product variants.2

Not to be confused with

Free listings differ from Shopping ads. Both come from the same Merchant Center data, but Shopping ads need an ad campaign and are paid for; free listings need neither.56
